Feeling safe is non-negotiable, and let me tell you, Downtown Austin nails it. Picture this: I'm casually strolling back to my hotel at 2 am from the lively 6th Ave club strip, and not a worry in the world. Lucky for me, my hotel was just a 10-minute walk from the action. Every weekend, 6th Ave shuts down for cars, with police officers blocking the streets. It gives the city that small-town feel and makes sure things stay in check when you're out partying late into the night.
Electric scooters are very popular there! You will need to download an app (Ex. Lime, Bird, etc.) to pay/unlock the scooter. Now, I didn't hop on one because navigating with my phone while scooting felt a bit much. I prefer to aimlessly explore when I am on those scooters, and since I was at a conference, I always had somewhere to be at a specific time.
CHEAP OR EXPENSIVE?
I would say everything is very average priced - not as pricey as NYC, but not as budget-friendly as the Dominican Republic
CASH OR CREDIT CARD?
Both are acceptable!
I was visiting Austin for AfroTech (a big tech conference for Black professionals), so during the day, the city was like a buzzing bubble just for us conference-goers. Lanyards everywhere – you could spot a fellow AfroTech attendee a mile away! 😂 Didn't see many folks outside of AfroTech, just some others with different conference tags.
Now, when it comes to being a tourist, Austin didn't exactly scream 'adventure' to me. Besides conferences or hanging out, it didn't feel like the city had a ton of unique touristy stuff going on (I might be wrong – didn't have much time to explore!). 6th Ave, the party central, was cool for a small town/big city vibe (not quite New Orleans or NYC levels, though). A stroll around the Colorado River? Nice, but not mind-blowing.
BUT, the food scene? Absolutely incredible! I was so blown away that I whipped up a little food guide for y'all: Austin's Culinary Delights: A Foodie's Guide
Would I come back? Maybe just for another round of those amazing eats! 🍔🌮
