West Indian Caribbean Dance: An Exploration of the World and Yourself

I have a plethora of hobbies, but dance will always be my true love and passion. I love immersing myself into the music and freely moving my body to the beat of the song. Sometimes I’ll even get a high euphoric feeling when I go out social dancing or perform.

This is the second edition of ”Dance: An Exploration of the World and Yourself” which is a series of articles and videos to inspire and educate you on the amazing dance genres that exist!

Introduction to West Indian Caribbean Dancing

As a yardie and island gyal, whining up my body and shaking my booty are in my blood! These vibrant dance genres offer an exciting path to embrace West Indian Caribbean culture while connecting intimately with your own sensuality. 🇯🇲💃🏽

Different Genres of West Indian Caribbean Dances

SOCA

• Soca is one of my favorite dance genres because it's all about the pure fun and high energy! Forget about "correct" technique; it's all about letting loose, embracing the vibe, and moving freely and passionately to the rhythm.

• Hailing from the vibrant roots of Trinidad and Tobago, this genre is the lifeblood of Caribbean carnivals, and trust me, you'll be dancing all night long 🎉💃🕺

• Oh no, I almost forgot to mention that dancing to Soca at Carnival gets extra spicy when you have a cute guy behind you! The electrifying energy of the music sets the perfect stage for an unforgettable dance 😜

DANCEHALL

• Dancehall is a vibrant and popular music genre with roots in Jamaica, emerging as a response to the limitations faced by the people of inner city Kingston in attending uptown dance events. 🇯🇲💃🏽

• Its infectious beats and captivating rhythms have not only gained widespread popularity in the Caribbean but dancehall (and reggae) have also served as a major source of inspiration for other Latin genres, including reggaeton and dembow. 🇯🇲🇩🇴🇵🇷
