Puerto Rico is more than just San Juan. The island's west coast, with cities like Aguadilla, offers a quieter and more authentic Puerto Rican experience. My friends and I drove three hours from San Juan to Aguadilla, seeking tranquility and adventure, and it did not disappoint.

The day starts with the sounds of roosters or salsa music in the morning. While my alarm clock woke me up at 7 am, the constant crowing of the roosters was very annoying. However, once I stepped outside, the annoyance was soon forgotten. The crisp morning air and humidity felt refreshing, and the peacefulness of the early morning was unmatched. I wanted to catch some waves before the heat and before my friends woke up.

I headed to Surfer’s Beach, equipped with a surfboard provided by my Airbnb. There's also a surf shop at the top of the hill called Surf Zone. Although there are no lifeguards, the beach had enough people around to feel safe.

I'm still learning to surf, and the less-than-ideal surfboard from my Airbnb didn't help, but I had an amazing time on the water. Surfing always brings me peace and tranquility, free from distractions and technology. The waves at Surfer’s Beach are perfect for beginners, and I enjoyed every moment despite the occasional wipeout.

During a break, I noticed I was the only Black surfer on the beach, a reminder of the historical segregation and economic barriers that have kept many Black people away from water sports. I aim to be part of the change, encouraging more Black people to explore water sports and adventure travel.

Exploring Aguadilla was an incredible experience, and I can’t wait to go back. The west coast of Puerto Rico is truly a hidden gem for those seeking a quieter, more authentic experience.
